Our Oklahoma City Bankruptcy Attorney Answers Your Questions
What made you choose a career in bankruptcy law? - I originally practiced in litigation, wills and trusts, criminal defense. That changed when the economic crash began around 2006. People were losing jobs everywhere and many started asking me for help with their mortgages. Our task was preventing people from losing their homes. When home prices totally collapsed in 2008, my bankruptcy filings increased dramatically. We have continued to practice bankruptcy law ever since.
In your opinion, what sets your firm apart from others in the area? - A lawyer's primary responsibility is to know the law, also to use the law to further the client's legal interests. We specialize in bankruptcy only—there is no question that we stay up to date on bankruptcy law. No bankruptcy case is too simple or too complex for our team to handle.
What steps do you take to prepare for a difficult case? - There are five vital steps we take to build success in our clients’ cases:
- Know the law involved in the case
- Know all the facts affecting the situation
- Steer clear of noise, flim-flam, and distractions
- Apply the law in the case
- Keep ahead of any and all developments
Can you describe a recent case you are particularly proud of? - A couple became victims of fraud during a business purchase. They didn't know that the business owner owed the bank a great deal of money. They didn't know that the business owner and the bank VP were best friends, either. The bank VP told my clients the business was a gold mine, worth every penny of the asking price, that the bank would gladly loan them the money to buy it (as long as they pledged their home and 2 cars as security).
To no one’s surprise, the business had a poor run from the start. The bank sued for payment and attempted to repossess the cars and foreclose on the house. We filed a chapter 7, got rid of the business debt. We later filed a chapter 13 and sued the bank for fraud in an adversary proceeding.
We won that case. My clients kept their home and cars. They got out of financial nightmare that threatened to ruin their lives.
In your opinion, what is the most rewarding aspect of your job? - Simple math, simple business—if you owe $250,000, and I am able to cancel that debt for a $1500 fee, what better financial value exists anywhere? The exact service I provide is called: “Free At Last.” When it comes to offering value, at least on this side of heaven, there is no better value than what I offer people for their money.
